The winning Merchant Ivory partnership is off target in this pretty but ultimately disappointing vehicle for Paul Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward. It's another of director James Ivory's polite studies of emotional repression, but the rambling, episodic tale of American family life in the 1930s and 1940s lacks cohesion. However, the two stars are superb as the eponymous married couple: Newman all starched conservatism as the stiff-necked lawyer, stubbornly resisting the changes around him; Woodward the devoted wife attempting in her own quiet way to open his eyes. The fine supporting cast includes Phenomenon's Kyra Sedgwick, Robert Sean Leonard (one of the Dead Poets Society fraternity) and Simon Callow.
