Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Despite the title, this small British independent film isn't exactly a barrel of laughs. An everyday story of miserable folk, it stars Samantha Morton as a newly widowed mum of two who's so depressed that she's barely able to function. Her youngest child Troy is feral and running around with wrong 'uns. Only her oldest, Vi is stable enough to be the glue that still binds the family together. But these ties are put to the test when the trio "holiday" in the seaside caravan park run by kindly Lias (Daniel Mays) and troubled sister Lillah (Billie Piper), as things take a turn for the even worse after Troy strikes up an ill-starred relationship with Piper's young daughter, a girl with definite attitude issues. Predictably, it all ends in more tears. Nicely made and with terrific performances from all the younger cast members in particular, this is downbeat entertainment for those who appreciate a film's quality but don't necessarily demand to be cheered up by the experience.
