Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Curiosity has hellish consequences for six unsuspecting students in this fairly scary haunted-house drama.Produced by James Wan (who directed the franchise-spawning Saw and Insidious), this sophomore effort from Will Canon (Brotherhood) begins with a police detective (Frank Grillo) called out to investigate multiple murder and missing persons at an old Louisiana mansion with a history of carnage. Post-Blair Witch and its myriad imitators, it's difficult to be dazzling and novel when it comes to tales of the supernatural, but director Canon keeps the tension ticking along by switching the narrative between flashbacks to the sextet's ill-fated seance and the police analysis of the fuzzy found footage left behind. Grillo (The Purge: Anarchy) and Mario Bello - as a psychologist brought in to make sense of events - add some serious clout and there are enough jump-out-of-your-skin shocks to quicken the pulse.
