Clark Gable had famously gone off to fight in the Second World War, and was decorated after flying bomb runs over Germany. But in 1945 he returned to Hollywood and made Adventure, giving MGM the dreamy advertising slogan, "Gable's back and Garson's got him!". But the movie, so anticipated, was a syrupy romance between a merchant sailor and a priggish bookworm. It might have worked at 70 minutes; at nearly double that, it's an endurance test.
