Sofie Gråbol, star of Scandi TV series The Killing, is a more menacing figure in this supernatural thriller with nods to Jewish folklore. She plays Chana, the overbearing mother of young Jewish academic Leah (Ellie Kendrick). Having suffered a mysterious seizure, Leah is cared for in London by her new partner, Maja (Josephine Park). Chana lives in the same building and pressures her daughter to observe the morals of her traditional Hasidic upbringing. But there's a malign presence in the house... First-time director and screenwriter Gabriel Bier Gislason (son of film-maker Susanne Bier) confidently examines the uneasy relationship between a religiously devout parent and her more free-spirited offspring. He also ticks off the requisite suspense boxes, and there's plenty of spookiness (apparitions, bumps in the night) amid the drama. While Park is convincing as the fish out of water, though, it's Gråbol as the cold, controlling Chana who steals the show.
