Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Not even Al Jolson had the temerity to play himself in Columbia's popular 1940s biopics, but who else would have been able to carry the life story (such as it was after 21 years) of Britain's first rock 'n' roll star, Tommy Steele, but the Bermondsey boy himself? Following young Tommy Hicks from his humble beginnings, through his days at sea to the contract with Decca and the hit single Rock with the Caveman, this is an unremarkable meteoric-rise story, not made any easier to swallow by Steele's swaggering performance. A must for fans at the time it was made, but it hasn't worn well.
