Following a mixed reception for Columbia's live-action adaptation of Ludwig Bemelmans's popular books, Disney returned to the original graphic style for this dark but always engaging adventure. Orphan Madeline, the smallest of the 12 girls residing at Miss Clavel's Parisian school, thinks she's finally found a family when a long-lost Viennese uncle comes to claim her. But she soon discovers she's bound for a cruel factory and only her ingenuity can save the day. Despite its sinister storyline, this should keep younger viewers entertained, and grown-ups will enjoy the voice talents of Lauren Bacall and Christopher Plummer, though they might wince at the songs.
