Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Alternatively called The Light in the Jungle, as well as Schweitzer and Lambarene, this clumsy biopic rather dims the brightness of its subject, Albert Schweitzer, musician, intellectual, missionary and Nobel Peace Prize winner, who rejected European acclaim to minister to disease-ridden natives in the African jungle as a kind of male Mother Teresa. It's not a whitewash according to this - he ran his deliberately run-down hospital like a tyrant - but its simplistic plot doesn't do the man justice. However, Malcolm McDowell is at the top of a form that wasn't even suggested by his starring role in if... over 20 years previously.
