Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News and As Good As It Gets all garnered director James L Brooks wonderful reviews, Oscar nods and box-office kudos. This swept-under-the-carpet folly achieved exactly the opposite, even though it's a reasonably well-observed and often funny comedy about showbiz Hollywood, with Nick Nolte playing a struggling actor trying to juggle his career with single-parent duties. Brooks filmed the movie as a musical, but all the songs were cut out after preview audiences gave it the thumbs down. The end result holds up surprisingly well despite the obvious holes where the songs have been dropped. A real oddity that's well worth watching.
