Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Adapted by producer/director Peter Glenville and Jean-Claude Carrière from Georges Feydeau and Maurice Desvallières's famous stage farce L'Hôtel du Libre Echange, this is a classic example of how what might be hilarious in the theatre can end up being a dead duck on the screen. The action is so flatly directed that not even that great editor Anne Coates can inject any pace into the endless round of bedroom toing and froing that should have been as funny as it is frantic. Robert Morley blusters to reasonable effect, but neither Alec Guinness nor Gina Lollobrigida looks comfortable pursuing their affair.
