Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Elmore Leonard adaptations tend to be hit-and-miss affairs - and this mediocre comedy crime thriller certainly comes into the latter category. Betraying its TV-movie status in every frame, the tale stars Columbo mainstay Peter Falk as a Miami bookmaker who flees to Italy when a Mob boss sets him up for murder. But after sending for his girlfriend (Glenne Headly), he ends up with a hitman and a deputy US marshal (James LeGros) on his trail. Despite brisk pacing and frequently snappy dialogue, the film is hampered by its flimsy plot and clumsy execution. Falk's performance is particularly lacklustre, and the remaining cast overplay their clichéd characters to the hilt.
