Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Quoting Dostoyevsky's gambling compulsion as an excuse for his own obsession, James Caan gives a remarkable performance as the university lecturer in hock to loan sharks for his debts. This was director Karel Reisz's most effective movie during his brief stay in Hollywood; he was obviously not as at home in California as he was "up north" with Saturday Night and Sunday Morning. It's a film that takes its time, but supporting actors such as Lauren Hutton, Paul Sorvino and Burt Young give necessary substance to the movie's style.
