Summary

Coming-of-age drama starring Zoe Ziegler and Julianne Nicholson. Rural Massachusetts, 1991: imaginative and precocious 11-year-old Lacy is very close to Janet, her laid-back acupuncturist single mother. Over the summer holidays, Lacy is forced to deal with a succession of Janet's friends and lovers, none of whom are entirely appealing to this impressionable young girl.

Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Annie Baker makes a distinctive film debut with this coming-of-age drama. In rural Massachusetts of 1991, 11-year-old Lacy (Zoe Ziegler) ditches summer camp to spend the holidays with her mother, Janet (Julianne Nicholson). Janet is an acupuncturist by trade, and she and her friends are self-confessed hippies, meaning Lacy's childhood is laidback and borderline bohemian. As the summer months pass, Janet's partner (Will Patton), friend (Sophie Okonedo) and theatre group leader (Elias Koteas) leave their mark on the pair, and above all the impressionable Lacy. Despite a spare approach to narrative, the film impressively remains absorbing and evocative of its time and place. With sophisticated performances from Nicholson and newcomer Ziegler, this assured first feature shows writer/director Baker to be a singular voice on screen as well as stage.
