Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This lively, fan-pleasing biography of Alex Ferguson, directed by his son Jason, stands testament to his iconic status in English football. During 26 years at Manchester United, he won 38 trophies, including five FA cups and two Champions League titles, and has been rewarded with a knighthood and a stand named in his honour at Old Trafford. Fergie is a self-effacing, self-taught grafter who even chews gum aggressively, and prefers to describe his innate understanding of psychology as "management". But in the light of his near-death experience with a brain haemorrhage in 2018 (at the age of 77), what he fears most is forgetting, rather than being forgotten. So, memories of a boyhood apprenticeship on the Clyde shipyards and his life with wife Cathy, whom he married in 1966, are as vital as recollections of a near-paternal relationship with Ryan Giggs (whom he describes as "dancing over the pitch"). Grateful and self-analytical in retirement, he reiterates, "Where we come from is important."
