Ambitious young Jodie wants more out of life than the small Texas country town she lives in has to offer. Jodie realizes that in order to pursue her dreams she will have to leave Texas and move to the big city. However, her shiftless factory worker boyfriend Kyle wants to stay in Texas.
The title of this drama could refer to the difficulties in making it in country music or it could refer to the tough life of small-town Texas. In the end, the plot revolves around an Urban Cowboy-type, Kyle Richardson (played by Jan-Michael Vincent), who labours at a factory by day and shakes his thing down at the saloon by night. His girlfriend Jodie, played by Kim Basinger (in her movie debut), has to choose between settling down with Kyle or following her friend and role model Caroline (real-life country star Tanya Tucker) to the bright lights of California and a recording career. Blink and you'll miss a brief appearance from Daryl Hannah. Predictable, but still watchable.
