Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Originally broadcast to TV audiences in 1972, this documentary directed by and starring John Lennon and Yoko Ono has suffered from nips and tucks down the years, but has been remastered and restored for another generation of fans. It's essentially a promo for Lennon's second album (along with more outré selections from Ono's companion release Fly) and opens with the timeless title song, shot in the ethereal white surroundings of the couple's Tittenhurst Park home. The remaining tracks capture John and Yoko partying (Crippled Inside), protesting (Gimme Some Truth) and larking about with famous friends (including Fred Astaire, Jack Palance and another former Beatle). Some of the ideas may seem a bit underdeveloped, but Yoko's avant-garde sensibilities and John's sense of the absurd enliven even the most banal moments. Inseparable throughout, this is John and Yoko on their own terms and at his solo creative peak. As home movies go, it takes some beating.
