Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Real events inspired this button-pushing medical drama, in which a paediatric nurse jeopardises her career by questioning the abilities of a reputedly brilliant heart surgeon. Megan Follows gives an increasingly overwrought performance as the reluctant whistle-blower, who challenges hospital politics after a growing number of children begin dying on the operating table. Though the film is predictable, it's ruthlessly effective with every scene constructed for maximum emotional impact. Simplistic character stereotypes and constant visual signposting add to the sense of manipulation, making an occasionally tense and disturbing plotline feel frequently contrived. Even so, proceedings remain watchable despite the descent into unconvincing melodrama in the final act.
