Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Tropical Malady) once more exercises his unique gift for finding the extraordinary in the everyday, in 2010's surprise Cannes Palme d'Or winner. Very much an acquired taste, this strange tale of a dying man visited by family ghosts is unlikely to convert the uninitiated from dull bewilderment to a state of ethereal serenity. For Weerasethakul, there's a metaphysical fascination in ordinary humanity - get on his mystical wavelength and the rewards are a genuinely haunted atmosphere, with the eerie appearance of Boonmee's long-lost son as a red-eyed monkey spirit, and keen emotional resonance, as mournful spectres from the past interact with the present day. With some broad humour and Thai politics thrown into the unconventional mix, the film's stark approach to the fantastic and supernatural won't appeal to the mainstream, despite a distinctive and visually arresting presentation.
