Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

No sooner had Julia Roberts won her Oscar for Erin Brockovich than Hollywood's TV-movie industry began seeking out its own everyday heroines. Housewife Pat Melancon hit the headlines when she tried to prevent the Japanese petrochemical conglomerate Shintech from opening a plant in an area already nicknamed "Cancer Alley" because of its toxic hinterland. She's played with suitable spirit here by Laura Innes, who receives typically feisty support from Ruby Dee, as an elderly activist who had devoted her life to exposing big business's reckless attitude to the environment. But, unfortunately, fact and rectitude don't always make for original or compelling drama.
