Fantasy drama starring Otto Sander and Peter Falk, a sequel to the classic Wings of Desire. Cassiel, from his lofty position as a guardian angel to the inhabitants of Berlin, is curious to experience life as a mortal human. When one of his charges falls from the balcony of her high-rise flat, Cassiel intervenes to save her life, knowing that he will forfeit his angelic status and henceforth live as a mortal. But Cassiel's supervisor is determined to make him pay for breaking the rules.
The sequel to German director Wim Wenders's fabulous Wings of Desire - remade by Hollywood as City of Angels - is a bit daft, but still just as visually beautiful and sweet-natured. Here, fallen angel Bruno Ganz has opened a pizza restaurant and his curious eternal pal Otto Sander wants a slice of ordinary mortality for himself. Unfortunately, he becomes a drunken bodyguard working for an illegal arms dealer in Wenders's melding of recent German history with weighty metaphysical concerns. Once again using stark black and white to depict the angels' viewpoint, Wenders indulges his favourite pastime of sending up American genre conventions. Overlong, but when was the last time you saw Peter Falk, Lou Reed and Mikhail Gorbachev in the same movie!
