Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

An endlessly amusing Warhol specimen, this Factory model appeared shortly after the artist's big-screen triumph, The Chelsea Girls, and took its cue from that film's languid obsession with flagrantly uninhibited (and unhinged) characters who aren't the least bit camera-shy. It features none-hit-wonder Joe Spencer as an intrinsically uninteresting biker hunk who wanders in for a series of static episodes in which he is subjected to some of the more entertainingly impossible members of the Warhol set, including a babbling Ingrid Superstar, a prickly Brigid Polk and the glorious Viva, who nonchalently lusts after Spencer in order to "alleviate the boredom". The conspicuous editing, the playful tensions between artifice and naturalism and the camp appeal of people doing "being" make for a fluid, modern experience. Warhol fans and detractors will be tickled and irritated respectively.
