Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Luminita Gheorghiu makes the most of her first starring role in Calin Peter Netzer's acerbic assault on the Romanian nouveau riche, which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin film festival. Determined to ensure her wastrel son (Bogdan Dumitrache) gets off scot free when a 14-year-old boy dies as a result of his careless driving, Gheorghiu's fearsome architect browbeats her doctor husband (Florin Zamfirescu) into influencing the medical evidence and then sets out to bribe an eyewitness (Vlad Ivanov) and the victim's grieving parents. These encounters are tensely scripted by Razvan Radulescu, as the mother seeks to use her status and overpowering maternal instincts to get her own way. However, her most devastating tête-à-tête is with her son's single-mum girlfriend (Ilinca Goia), who has more in common with the older woman than she is willing to concede. For all the mother's machinations, however, the great irony is that this is still very much a man's world, where inequality, iniquity and injustice exist in equal measure because of the least desirable elements of communism and capitalism. Yet, despite the power of the performances, this drama is fussily photographed by Andrei Butica and lacks the darkly satirical edge of the best Romanian New Wave cinema.
