Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Inspired by the venerable Bruce Bairnsfather comic-strip, this is a light-hearted hybrid of Colonel Blimp and Howard Hawks's combat drama, The Road to Glory. Envious of son John Mills enlisting in the army, First World War veteran Morland Graham blags his way into the Pioneer Corps and finds himself in France assisting in the capture of a Nazi platoon. With its cast of practised farceurs, this flag-waver is very much of its time. But its behind-the-scenes personnel is pretty remarkable, with Georges Périnal on camera, Vincent Korda responsible for the production design and Charles Crichton on duty in the cutting room.
