Playing out like a slapstick Sweeney Todd, this blacker-than-black comedy leavens its misanthropy with a mordant wit. Unhappily married couple Sophie (Marina Fois) and Vincent (writer/director Fabrice Eboué) own a failing butcher's shop in small-town France. But when they accidentally kill one of the vegan activists who vandalised their shop, their luck starts to change. While disposing of the body, they discover that human meat is pretty moreish and their customers can't get enough of it, which poses quite a supply issue. Soon, like the serial killers in Sophie's beloved true-crime shows, they're hunting people in a series of laugh-out-loud montages, but can they keep their hands off the self-righteous prig who's dating their daughter? What follows manages to poke fun at just about everybody, so it never feels too cruel. Eboué's crestfallen Victor is especially endearing, even as he shoots and stabs his way through the local herbivores. The result is deeply, deliciously funny.
