Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Directed by Clarence "Capability" Brown from Eugene O'Neill's play, this is a typical piece of MGM Americana that enshrines small-town values while concentrating on a boy's first love affair and the advice he (Eric Linden) gets from his pop, Lionel Barrymore. Since Mickey Rooney is in the cast as Linden's annoying younger brother, this looks like a dry run for the Andy Hardy series, which started two years later. It was remade in 1948 as the musical Summer Holiday, in which Rooney takes over the starring role of the lovestruck Richard Miller.
