Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

In this handsomely shot tale of loss and redemption, city trader James Nesbitt becomes a lighthouse keeper on a remote Scottish island following the deaths of his wife and children. But after using isolation to bury his emotions, he's forced to finally confront them when a little girl (Lillian Woods) is washed ashore. Quirkiness then takes precedence over melancholy, as the youngster tries to befriend her saviour by employing the tricks of her still-missing-at-sea magician dad, while Nesbitt maintains a vow of silence. Despite the symbolism, this refusal to talk feels awkward and quickly grates, making an already slow-burning film seem even more lethargic. Coupled with a stilted and unconvincing Woods, it turns self-conscious whimsy into silly unrealism that robs the climax of its dramatic punch.
