Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

One of those Warner Bros "torn from today's headlines" crime movies, this routine melodrama is redeemed by the ever-excellent John Garfield. He's ideally cast as an innocent on the run, fleeing a murder rap. In jail, he falls for Priscilla Lane, the work-farm boss's stepdaughter, while newspaper editor Alan Hale takes an interest in his case. The story's more than a mite overfamiliar, but there's sterling acting from a cast of Warners regulars, including John Litel, Stanley Ridges and Moroni Olsen, and director Lewis Seiler doesn't get in the way. A little more originality all round wouldn't have gone amiss, though.
