Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Alfred Hitchcock's first talking picture was also the earliest in which he used a famous landmark to stage the finale. The visuals are eerily expressionistic, the trick photography in the British Museum sequence is first class and the recurrence of the word "knife" on the soundtrack is amusingly ghoulish. But the restrictions placed on film-makers by primitive sound recording techniques make for stilted action and acting; the predominantly silent version of this film is infinitely better. Although most film histories claim this to be the first British talkie, the honour actually goes to Arthur Maude's The Clue of the New Pin.
