Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Shocking crimes that jolt respectable American communities have provided movie fodder for years. Joining a long list is this true tale about a supposedly kindly, decent, devout Texas housewife who beat her best friend to death with an axe. The build-up and backdrop to this grim event are filtered through the trial with tremendous insight and a hefty dramatic punch by director Stephen Gyllenhaal, who described a similar dark heart of rural life in Paris Trout. However, it is Barbara Hershey's far-reaching, soulful performance as the housewife that you'll remember.
