Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

A little-known urban legend about Paris's most famous landmark is depicted in grand and sentimental style in this French romantic drama. In the 1880s, engineer Gustave Eiffel (Romain Duris) is the toast of the French capital when he returns home from helping to build the Statue of Liberty. However, when commissioned to make a new monument in Paris, the "iron magician" is left uninspired. That is until he bumps into his first love, Adrienne (Sex Education's Emma Mackey), and their rekindled romance compels him to build the Eiffel Tower in tribute to her, despite problems with funding, workers and people calling the Tower ugly. A disclaimer says the film is "freely inspired by a true story", although the historical dubiousness of the plot - and particularly the ending - might prove too mawkish for some. Mackey is a commanding presence, though, and striking cinematography makes the vividly reimagined 19th-century Paris the real star of the show.
