Even though this was Swedish-born Warner Oland's sixth outing as Earl Derr Biggers's Oriental detective, this is only our second chance to see him in action as, sadly, Charlie Chan Carries On, Charlie Chan's Chance, Charlie Chan's Courage and Charlie Chan's Greatest Case have all perished. A teasing mystery and a superb supporting cast make this one of the most enjoyable entries in the series, as Chan investigates a murder among the hunting, shooting and fishing set. Screenwriter Philip MacDonald's impression of English folk is a bit rum, but Ray Milland, EE Clive and Madge Bellamy admirably flesh out the caricatures.
