Ricki Lake is known to most viewers today as a chat-show host than as the kooky actress who made her name in the movies of trash king John Waters. Although her usual lively self, she has a hard act to follow in this TV-movie remake of German director Percy Adlon's cult hit Sugarbaby, as the outsize and outlandish Marianne Sägebrecht gave such a fine performance as the lovesick mortician in the original. However, director Paul Schneider elicits attractive performances from Lake and her co-star Craig Sheffer, but it's still not a patch on the first movie.
