Review

You might remember the messy controversy that blew up in 2009 and was nicknamed “Climategate”. A hacker stole emails from the University of East Anglia and released extracts implying scientists were doctoring data to make global warming look worse than it was.

Climate sceptics seized on the emails in the run-up to the Cop15 conference in Copenhagen, and when it eventually emerged that the scientists were blameless and their data sound, it was too late, the waters had been muddied.

Now on the eve of Cop26, this dramatised account of the scandal charts the human cost, with Jason Watkins as the traumatised professor at the centre of the storm and Victoria Hamilton as his protective wife. Watkins is great and, although the storytelling is oddly disjointed, we get a moving account of a phoney controversy that had far-reaching effects.
