Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Nathalie Baye, one of France's finest screen actresses, teams with daughter Laura Smet for the first time in this austere adaptation of Ernest Pérochon's 1924 novel about life on a family farm during the First World War. As in Of Gods and Men (2010), writer/director Xavier Beauvois captures the tensions within an enclosed community with incisive skill. But the visual contrast between that film's sun-scorched Algeria and this one's lush French landscapes couldn't be greater, with cinematographer Caroline Champetier taking her cues from the rustic realism of the Barbizon school of painting. As Baye frets about her son's crush on the orphan she has taken in, and Smet fights to keep preserve her reputation in light of gossip, Beauvois deftly avoids melodramatics to deliver an authentic and gruellingly compelling film.
