This dry period black comedy stars Diana Rigg as a journalist infiltrating a gang of professional killers whose members only accept contracts on those who "deserve" to die. Director Basil Dearden infuses the tale with joyous glee and no little character insight as Rigg persuades the gang's leader, Oliver Reed, to allow himself to become a target as a challenge to his professionalism. It's a clever twist in a madcap yarn by Jack London and Robert Fish, and Reed is wonderfully malevolent through his charm, while the quality cast (including Telly Savalas and Warren Mitchell) gauges the light tone perfectly.
