Although it lacked the star power of the original, MGM could have no complaints about the performances in this remake of its 1936 screwball classic, Libeled Lady. Keenan Wynn is no substitute for Spencer Tracy, but he barks admirably as the editor who sends reporter Van Johnson to charm heiress Esther Williams out of a suit against their paper. The leads can't match the chemistry of William Powell and Myrna Loy, but they still look good together (cameraman Harry Stradling's classy photography is simply ravishing and positively enhances them), while Lucille Ball, in one of her breakthrough roles, is every bit as sparky as Jean Harlow.
