Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

It's not often that the same story is well-filmed three times around, but this cheaply made version of Ernest Hemingway's To Have and Have Not is creditably close to Howard Hawks's adaptation in 1944 and Michael Curtiz's The Breaking Point in 1950. The key again is a skilled director, Don Siegel, who draws a surprisingly persuasive performance from Audie Murphy as the hard-up fishing boat captain. Patricia Owens is good as his caring wife, Everett Sloane excellent as his drunken assistant, and Eddie Albert outstanding as the treacherous gunrunner who hires his boat.
