Action adventure starring Brendan Fraser. While on an expedition to search for his missing brother, a geologist and his companions become trapped in a cave. As they search for an escape route, they discover a lost underground world of oceans, prehistoric creatures and man-eating plants.
The original fantasy tale by Jules Verne is merely a Rough Guide to surviving in the planet's bowels according to this wholesome adventure. While searching for his missing explorer brother in some Icelandic caves, scientist Brendan Fraser, his nephew Josh Hutcherson and guide Anita Briem are forced deep underground, where they discover subterranean jungles, raging oceans and prehistoric creatures. Although insipidly directed by visual effects supervisor Eric Brevig (Men in Black, The Day after Tomorrow), the film does boast fun-scary dinosaur dangers, some rollercoaster-ride thrills and non-threatening flying piranha. But the only thing it has in common with the still-superior 1959 version is the spectacular landscapes; light-hearted banter and relentless Disney cuteness replace any sense of wonder.
