Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

After a series of shorts, documentarist Patrick Keiller made his feature debut with this unique portrait of the English capital. With its highly literate commentary from Paul Scofield, this is essentially the story of three expeditions as the narrator and his friend Robinson go in search of London's literary past as well as exploring the reasons why the city sold its soul to suburbia. However, distractions abound as contemporary events like the 1992 General Election and IRA bomb attacks intrude upon their musings. The juxtaposition of text and image is endlessly intriguing as Keiller lilts between travelogue, love letter and lament. Keiller's follow-up to this, a journey around England called Robinson in Space, is equally as fascinating.
