The fourth and last of MGM's great Broadway Melody series is perfection in rhythm. Fred Astaire and George Murphy play sparring dance partners, though together they perform terrifically; the seemingly effortless sophistication of Please Don't Monkey with Broadway is utterly beguiling. A masked Douglas McPhail introduces the Cole Porter classic I Concentrate on You, but the movie's undoubted highlight is Astaire sublimely performing a tap with toothy Eleanor Powell to Cole's Begin the Beguine on a glossy, highly polished black-and-white set. As Frank Sinatra said in That's Entertainment!: "You can wait around and hope, but you'll never see its like again."
