Isabella Allende is a great contemporary novelist but film adaptations of her work to date have been poor. Sadly this is no exception. Antonio Banderas and Jennifer Connelly star as the lovers whose relationship is set against a backdrop of corruption in Chile. Connelly is unconvincing as a naive journalist, unfamiliar with Chile's criminal underbelly. Banderas is a photographer trying to expose the fact that her fiancé is a fascist involved in official torture and the corruption at the heart of government. Notable for appalling direction and dialogue, the film jolts from one dysfunctional scene to another. Banderas is better than this.
