Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Not the first and by no means the last film version of Joseph Conrad's novel, with Fredric March as Hendrik Heyst, the perpetual exile who lives on an island in the Malay archipelago, contentedly detached from life until he rescues an English girl and has to cope with three rogues sent by local strongman Sig Ruman. Time and time again, Conrad's deeply metaphysical dramas prove tough nuts to crack, though in this case the studio-imposed restriction on length doomed everyone to failure before the cameras started rolling. The cast do their best but it was ill-conceived as a B-movie with pretensions.
