Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

A controversial Irish feature from Joe Comerford. In keeping with the principles of the non-sectarian school at the centre of the drama, Comerford tries to be even-handed (although his sympathies are apparent) and he avoids many of the situations and characters inherent in films about the Troubles. Frances Tomelty does well as the idealistic matron, as does Marc O'Shea as the confused teenager from Northern Ireland who seeks refuge south of the border. The tarring and feathering scene and the brutal army reprisal finale will chill to the marrow.
