The marvel of nature brings humanity to the battlefield in this sentimental American Civil War drama. Based on a short story by Nobel Prize-winning author Mikhail Sholokhov, it stars Ryan Merriman as a Union soldier who's left spiritually crushed after witnessing his brother's death in combat. But when his horse gives birth amid the chaos, the foal becomes a symbol of hope for the entire unit. It's a warm-hearted though naive concept that focuses more on emotion than credible action. Handsome landscapes complement the film's reflective air, while the unexpected finale is a poignant reminder of the reality of war.
