Foreign correspondent Pete Garvey has 5 days to win back his former fiancée, or he'll lose the orphans he adopted.
Despite a fine cast headed by Bing Crosby, Jane Wyman, Franchot Tone and an excellent Alexis Smith, this Frank Capra comedy about a newsman who imports two war orphans in order to win back a former fiancée, is a disappointment. It came from a bad period in the director's career (he had just turned down the chance to make Roman Holiday with Cary Grant and Elizabeth Taylor) and his leaden approach betrays his lack of confidence in the material. The film does, though, include the year's Oscar-winning song, Hoagy Carmichael and Johnny Mercer's In The Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening, infectiously put over by Crosby and Wyman.
