Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This gripping thriller, based on the true story of the Soviet Union's first recorded serial killer, makes for absorbing and fascinating viewing, and also provides a penetrating look at the declining years of the USSR. Former schoolteacher Andre Chikatilo (played by Jeffrey DeMunn) murdered and mutilated 52 children over an eight-year period, yet managed to evade capture because of government corruption, ineffectual police procedures and the fact that the authorities couldn't admit to such western depravity polluting their culture. Stephen Rea is subtly convincing as the forensics expert who doggedly pursued the killer, while Donald Sutherland deservedly won numerous awards as the military man who finally backed his hunches.
