Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Cleverly blending interviews and archive footage with dramatised reconstructions, this fine Anglo-Spanish biopic tells the remarkable rags-to-riches tale of Severiano Ballesteros, the poor Spanish farmer's son who became one of golf's greatest players. Released three years after his death at the age of 54, this story of the five-time Major winner and Ryder Cup captain will primarily appeal to golf fans and admirers of sublime sporting talent. That's underlined by contributions from such golfing stars as Nick Faldo, Gary Player and Tiger Woods. But the dramatised elements, which are used to portray Seve's early years (in which he's played by José Luis Gutiérrez) broaden its appeal somewhat. They're nicely done and, dovetailed with archive of the older Seve in his pomp, cleverly sidestep the problem of actors convincingly playing athletes. Clocking in at two hours, it's a bit of a long haul, but as a whole it's a fittingly emotional and inspirational docudrama.
