Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Occasionally guilty of trying to be too mischievous for his own good, Hungarian director Janos Rozsa has nevertheless produced a witty morality story about the dangers of lust and greed. Spied on by the young son by means of a network of periscopes dotted around the house, the affluent family at the centre of this satire is so preoccupied by upward mobility and sexual gratification that its members communicate only through chalked messages on a blackboard in the kitchen. Unfortunately, the philosophising that follows the neglected daughter's suicide bid lacks insight and sits uncomfortably amid the tomfoolery.
