Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

English producer/director Herbert Wilcox's first Hollywood film is an account of Nurse Edith Cavell, the brave and self-sacrificing hero of the First World War who smuggled English soldiers out of German-occupied Belgium and was executed as a spy for her pains. Anna Neagle (Wilcox's wife), an actress not noted for her dramatic range, makes do with her natural regal dignity in a film that is sober, competent and dull, yet nevertheless quite affecting. Wilcox made a much stronger silent version of the story ten years earlier with Sybil Thorndike.
