Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Director Tony Richardson attempted to repeat the success of his Oscar-winning Tom Jones with another Fielding adaptation but falls flat on his farce. The bed-and-bawdy plot sees Peter Firth as the 18th-century footman involved in romantic adventures with the likes of Ann-Margret. It certainly looks good but Richardson fails to inject the necessary verve and pacing, opting for conventional stereotypes - lascivious gentlewomen, drunken squire - and humour which is genteel at best.
